Dak Prescott 'Team-Friendly' Extension: Would Cowboys QB Be 'Excited' About It?

“I'm looking forward to an extension,'' Dak Prescott says. "When that time comes, it will happen. I’m with (Cowboys COO) Stephen (Jones); it may just happen overnight. But when it happens, it happens. It’ll be great.”

FRISCO - There is a positive vibe as it relates to contract talks between the Dallas Cowboys and Dak Prescott.

Now,'' Prescott said on Tuesday at a charity event, "it’s just about winning.”

If that "vibe'' holds, this new deal really can be animosity-free as it can about both the Cowboys gaining cap room and Prescott gaining security, while adding to his bank ...

Without breaking the Cowboys' salary cap "bank.''

Prescott is signed through 2024 and is set to make $31 million in 2023. No problems there. But he will, as it stands, count $49.13 million against the salary cap.

That's the second-highest figure in the league. And that is a problem.

How to fix it? From the Dallas standpoint, that's easy: Find a comfortably annual salary number, not too much in excess of his existing $40 million APY, and then add four or five years to his contract.

Guarantee enough at signing and maybe everybody is happy - possibly including Dak, because such a move can create a huge amount of room under the 2023, room that will help the Cowboys assemble a supportive roster.

But that is a "team-friendly'' concept and Prescott is not obliged to do that. Could he play hardball again, as he did when he won his previous four-year, $160 million deal that included a $66 million signing bonus?

Why shouldn't he ask for, say, $50 million APY? What will Dallas do (besides positioning owner Jerry Jones to "blame'' the contract) if he does so?

“Yeah, 100 percent,'' Dak said about the obviously positive aspect of an extension. "I’m excited to be a Dallas Cowboy. Always dreamed to be here, and now that I’m here, I don’t expect to play for any other team.

"Now, it’s just about winning.”

Actually, before we get to winning, it's about negotiation. COO Stephen Jones has suggested that we all could wake up one morning and the deal could be done.

Dak is aware of Stephen's remark.

“I'm looking forward to an extension,'' Prescott said. "When that time comes, it will happen. I’m with Stephen; it may just happen overnight. But when it happens, it happens. It’ll be great.”
