Cowboys Add Rookie QB Matthew McKay to Minicamp Roster

The Cowboys have on their roster Dak Prescott, Cooper Rush and Will Grier at quarterback. It is customary to add a rookie QB or two for these workouts. So this is something short of a "signing'' of McKay.

FRISCO - The Dallas Cowboys vowed to select a developmental quarterback in the recent NFL Draft, but the chips fell a certain way, preventing that from happening.

But now comes the rookie minicamp here at The Star this weekend, and an arm is needed ... so at least one rookie quarterback will be in attendance.

Enter Matthew McKay from Elon University - located in ... Well, Elon, North Carolina, a school with 7,000 students ... and maybe one QB who can play at little.

McKay, who went undrafted last month, has received an invite from the Cowboys to throw at minicamp, the news coming per his own Twitter account.

A native of Raleigh, McKay actually started his career at North Carolina State - which sounds slightly more impressive than having matriculated at Elon. He stayed in the Wolfpack program for three years, redshirting in 2017 but then appearing in 11 games, with five starts, from 2018 to 2019. While at NC State, McKay passed for 997 yards, three touchdowns and one interception.

From there, McKay moved on to play at Montana State, where in 2021 put up some numbers as he threw for 2,037 yards, 17 touchdowns and only three interceptions as a member of the Bobcats.

In 2022 at Elon, McKay (6-4, 212) started all 12 games at quarterback and threw for 2,709 yards, 21 touchdowns and four interceptions while also rushing for 458 yards and three touchdowns.

The Cowboys of course have on their roster Dak Prescott, Cooper Rush and Will Grier at quarterback. It is customary to add a rookie QB or two for these workouts. So this is something short of a "signing'' of McKay. But his arm will help the Cowboys. And he'll have the change to showcase something more.
