Dak Prescott: Cowboys Would Be 'Lucky' to Re-Sign Ezekiel Elliott - VIDEO

Dak Prescott opens up to us about wanting an Ezekiel Elliott reunion. It is still a move the Cowboys are unlikely to make?

DALLAS - Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott learned the hard way this offseason that the NFL is a business when the Cowboys announced they would be releasing running back Ezekiel Elliott. But based on our Friday night conversation with Prescott, he's not quite ready to let go.

"I am excited for where he’s going in the future,'' Prescott said as he prepped for duties as the co-chairman (with Troy Aikman) at the Children's Cancer Fund Gala in Dallas. "Whatever team gets him is gonna be lucky. Hopefully he comes back here.''

Prescott has led the charge of this concept, even as it certainly does not seem like that is the intention of the Dallas front office. But is it a bad idea?

The Cowboys applied the $10 million franchise tag to Tony Pollard, signaling a new era in the Cowboys backfield. Pollard showed he was ready to be the guy at running back for Dallas, rushing for 1,007 yards and nine touchdowns last season while recording 39 receptions for 371 receiving yards and three touchdowns through the air.

Couldn't the Cowboys bring back Elliott to spell Pollard in a reduced role from where they were last season? The Cowboys brought in Ronald Jones on a one-year contract while already rostering Rico Dowdle and Malik Davis. ... Causing one to wonder: If a reunion with Zeke was sensible, why didn't Dallas make him a "sensible'' offer and avoid going through the challenges and emotions of cutting him?

Somewhere in this equation there is the possibility that the Cowboys opt to pick a running back in this week's NFL Draft. They've been linked to star Texas running back Bijan Robinson at No. 26 overall countless times, and the Cowboys have found themselves linked to Jahmyr Gibbs of Alabama as well.

How much of Dak's thinking here is fueled by friendship? Prescott wanting the Cowboys ultimately to bring back Elliott is understandable as they've spent their entire careers together and are, as Prescott said, "best friends.''

"He's just continuing to grind,'' Dak said, offering some big-picture perspective. "He doesn't get too high or too low ... I've seen a good bit of him in these past few weeks ... He's my best friend and football is just a part of our life.''
