Cowboys Moves Create 'Dream Scenario' in NFL Draft?

After finishing 12-5 last season the Dallas Cowboys currently hold the the No. 26 pick in the NFL Draft. Can they still make a big splash?

It’s rare to see a team that just wrapped up a 12-win campaign and reach the NFC Divisional Round head into the NFL Draft with a relatively high level of excitement.

But that’s exactly where the Dallas Cowboys find themselves.

"It's a dream scenario for a team that loves to draft," wrote Fox Sports' David Helman, the former DallasCowboys.com beat guy. "The Cowboys have patched the holes in their roster more efficiently than they usually do, and now they're in place for the most coveted of all strategies: 'Best Player Available'."

Following a second-place finish in a deep NFC East and playoff victory in the Wild Card round, Dallas has revamped its team in the early stages of the NFL offseason.

By re-signing key pieces from last season such as Pro Bowlers Tony Pollard, Leighton Vander Esch and Donovan Wilson, the Cowboys bring back familiar faces who address roster needs.

Along with signing talented defensive pieces such as five-time Pro Bowler cornerback Stephen Gilmore and tackle Jonathan Hankins, Dallas heads into the draft with flexibility at the No. 26 spot. Same thing on offense in part due to the Brandin Cooks.

Will it be Pittsburgh defensive tackle Calijah Kancey, who has drawn comparisons to future Hall-of-Famer Aaron Donald?

Or could it be another defensive tackle such as Michigan product Mazi Smith?

Or will they not address defense in the first round at all, and instead go after Notre Dame's Michael Mayer, who ranked first among tight ends in touchdowns (nine) and was crowned a First-Team All-American.

Either way, a Cowboys unit that is arguably the NFC's second-best team should be prepared for an improved roster that can build upon its 2022 campaign - which would be the realization of that "dream.''
