Cowboys Draft 'Future No. 2' WR Zay Flowers, Or Is Brandin Cooks Enough?

The Dallas Cowboys added Brandin Cooks via trade this offseason and in CBS Sports' latest mock draft, Zay Flowers is coming to The Star as well.

The Dallas Cowboys love to have plenty of offensive playmakers and yet after trading away Amari Cooper last offseason, there was a hole in the offense that was never quite filled.

Fast-forward to this offseason, and Brandin Cooks was acquired via trade from the Houston Texans as it filled a need for the Cowboys. But with the NFL Draft fast approaching, in their latest mock, CBS Sports is predicting that with pick No. 26, Dallas is adding to its offensive arsenal with Boston College standout Zay Flowers coming to Frisco.

Part of their logic? "There's a similar player on the roster from whom he can learn in Brandin Cooks, and Flowers can be the No. 2 to CeeDee Lamb in the future.''

Our argument against is two-fold ...

One, we generally dislike the idea of "drafting a backup.'' And this suggestion means that Flowers is not only destined to be Cooks' caddie, but that even later, he'll still be just a second banana to Lamb.

And two, Cooks, at 5-10, does not fit the usual Dallas wideout mold. So he is an exception. Flowers is 5-9; do the Cowboys really want two exceptions?

Having said all of that ...

Teams can never have too many weapons, right?

Should this move materialize, Dak Prescott will have CeeDee Lamb, Cooks, Michael Gallup, Flowers, Jake Ferguson, Peyton Hendershot, and running back Tony Pollard as targets.

It's an embarrassment of riches.

There have been rumors of Dallas taking running back Bijan Robinson or an offensive lineman, with O'Cyrus Torrence and Steve Avila having seen their names mentioned there.

But taking a receiver in pre-Draft visitor to The Star Flowers, who had a career year at Boston College last season as he totaled 1,077 yards and 12 touchdowns, would be a good investment on that side of the ball, seeing as the defense is fairly set under coordinator Dan Quinn.

With Quinn's unit becoming the barometer for the team, the offense needs to do its part, and by adding another playmaker in Flowers, Dallas will have weapons all over the field for Prescott to take advantage of.
