FRISCO - Dallas Cowboys fans sometimes pine for the idea of heroic quarterback Troy Aikman taking over here at The Star as Jerry Jones’ GM. We’ve detailed often why Cowboys Nation shouldn’t hold its breath …

But let’s do a make-believe GM experiment: Pretend the Hall of Fame quarterback really is in charge of the current Cowboys; what would he do about the franchise’s biggest personnel question mark in Dak Prescott?

His "best years are ahead of him,” Aikman said of Dak … and there is your pseudo-GM answer.

Aikman-Prescott

“He's proven he can play at a high level,” Aikman said. “I know they've come up short as a team the last few years, but he's been a great player in this league and his best years are ahead of him."

Aikman, the last Cowboys quarterback to win a Super Bowl (three of them, actually, 30 years ago) isn’t knee-deep in the specifics of Dak’s coming salary. (As in, maybe $60 million APY, the biggest payday in NFL history?)

But he is saying in general that the deal needs to get done in part for cap reasons  … and that Dak is destined to live up to it.

"They've got to do this deal, don't they? They've got to free up some money, so he'll be here a little while longer - and he should be,” said Aikman, speaking from a charity event for Children's Cancer Fund in Dallas.

Aikman acknowledged the reality of doubt surrounding a Dak-led team that has underperformed in the playoffs.

“Until you do it, there's always the question of whether or not you can,” said Aikman, adding that the latest playoff failure against the Green Bay Packers last season will be a haunting one.

"I do think this last year is gonna be a year that the organization and the players all look back on and see they really missed an opportunity,” he said.

But the best way to fix it all going forward? Pay Prescott, who is entering the final year of his contract while coming off a career-best season in which he finished second to Lamar Jackson for the NFL MVP award.

Thats the word and the judgment from Cowboys Nation’s favorite dream GM Troy Aikman.
