Cowboys 'Awkward' Re-Signing of Ezekiel Elliott 'Highly Unlikely' - Insider

With Ezekiel Elliott remaining unsigned in free agency, his chances of returning to Dallas are still low.

A popular area of discussion surrounding the Dallas Cowboys this offseason has been running back Ezekiel Elliott. From the announcement that he would be released to speculation on where he ends up, Elliott has been a hot topic.

Among those discussions surrounding the veteran back has been a debate on whether or not the Cowboys should bring him back. 

Well, any hopes of a potential reunion took another hit on Wednesday, as Jon Machota of The Athletic was asked in his mailbag what he thinks of the potential that Elliott would stay put. 

"I think it would be a little awkward, but if the price was right, I would be on board," Machota said. "He was a leader behind the scenes. While he was no longer producing like a top back, he was still getting it done in short-yardage situations, which hasn’t exactly been replaced since he was released."

"If both sides were in agreement, it would make sense. With all of that being said, I think it’s highly unlikely."

Bringing back Elliott in a vacuum is a move that could make sense for the Cowboys. They would then be able to ease Pollard back, if necessary, from his injury and not have to rely on a fresh face to learn their system.

However, these decisions are not made in a vacuum and there are more reasons to why they won't bring him back than why they would. 

First and foremost, they have full faith that Pollard can be the guy coming out of the backfield - which the numbers support. Last season for the Cowboys he rushed for 1,007 yards and nine touchdowns, adding 39 receptions for 371 yards and three touchdowns through the air. 

Secondly, they have a deep running back room in Dallas behind Pollard. This offseason the Cowboys signed Ronald Jones and drafted Deuce Vaughn, with Malik Davis and Rico Dowdle also options. 

Until Elliott ultimately signs with a new team there will be clamoring for him to return to Dallas. While that is a fun story and would make for an interesting dynamic this season, it continues to remain an unlikely outcome.
