Cowboys Ex Ezekiel Elliott Projected to Follow Kellen Moore to Chargers

While Ezekiel Elliott waits to see where he will continue his NFL career next season, Bleacher Report listed an interesting option for the former Cowboy.

Even though the Dallas Cowboys releasing Ezekiel Elliott felt inevitable upon the franchise tagging of Tony Pollard, it seemed he'd still land on his feet with a contender looking for a veteran running back.

Well, so far he has not landed on his feet but rather stumbled out of the gate with seemingly little interest. Elliott even had three "potential" landing spots in the Cincinnati Bengals, New York Jets and Philadelphia Eagles, with all three shutting down a potential signing.

Now, as Elliott continues to look for his next team, Bleacher Report listed a potential reunion with former offensive coordinator Kellen Moore in Los Angeles as a fit for the veteran running back.

"If Elliott is willing to expand his options, he should follow his former offensive coordinator Kellen Moore to the Los Angeles Chargers. Los Angeles has an unsettled contract situation with running back Austin Ekeler.

Elliott could fill a void in the Chargers backfield or complement Ekeler—similar to his role alongside Tony Pollard in Dallas over the past few years."

If the Chargers do lose Ekeler, Elliott could be a reliable veteran replacement. In his last season as a Cowboy he rushed for 876 yards and 12 touchdowns, not far behind Ekeler's 915 yards and 13 touchdowns.

Where Elliott lacks compared to Ekeler, though, is of course in the passing game. Last season saw Ekeler record 722 receiving yards and five touchdowns on 107 receptions, leading the Chargers in both receptions and receiving touchdowns, while Elliott caught 17 passes for 92 yards.

Even if Ekeler and the Chargers come to an agreement on a new contract that keeps him in LA, Elliott could make sense as a complement in the same vein as he was to Pollard in Dallas last season.

In their projection, Elliott is worth a two-year, $9 million contract with $6.5 million guaranteed. Of course that isn't a guarantee as to what he'll earn, or even that the Chargers themselves will bring him aboard.

However, Elliott following Moore to the Chargers could make sense for both parties, at least on paper.
