Troy Aikman Reveals 'Time's Passed' to Be NFL GM; Should Cowboys Hire?

Dallas Cowboys legend Troy Aikman has in recent years spoken often to CowboysSI.com's own Mike Fisher about family and football and future. The subject of Aikman - who left the field and headed straight to the broadcast booth in 2001 - choosing to become an NFL GM has been broached numerous times.

“I think,'' Aikman told Fish not long ago, "the opportunity has probably passed me by. And although at some levels I guess that might be disappointing, on the other hand, I’m probably ready to just kind of do the things that I really want to do and maybe that doesn’t entail going and scouting players 365 days out of the year.”

Indeed, now, after over 20 years as a top NFL voice on TV, his daughters grown and his schedule free enough to travel with girlfriend Haley Clark, retirement is on his mind.

Aikman has always told Fish that he understood the structure of the Jones family's ownership of the Cowboys would preclude him from being the GM in Dallas. But what about another role?

He recently told The Ticket, per the Dallas Morning News. "There may come a time that I’d be interested in just helping out with a club, with an organization, and not necessarily in an official capacity."

Aikman, still a Dallas resident and deeply involved here in charity work and business, said he's mindful of "our time (as humans) being limited.'' He is mentioning both an eventual retirement and maybe a future that takes him away from his beloved Texas.

"I very much love the state of Texas and I love living in Dallas, but I don’t know how much longer I’ll do it," Aikman said. "I’ve got a pretty good idea. And not to suggest that I’m retiring anytime in the near future, but I’ve got an idea as to when I believe that I’ll retire.”

The 56-year-old Aikman played from 1989 to 2000 in a Cowboys jersey, winning the franchise three Super Bowls. If his career post-media takes him into a role with an organization - whether he's full-time in Dallas or simply an advisor to the Jones family - a someday full-circle return to the Cowboys would only make sense.
