Cowboys' 'Turpin is a Rocket Ship!' Will McCarthy Use KaVontae on Offense?

Dallas Cowboys receiver KaVontae Turpin is a unique talent, and coach Mike McCarthy has praised his efforts as more gets added to his offensive plate.

Dallas Cowboys return man KaVontae Turpin has been turning heads at training camp in Oxnard. After his rookie season saw him used as a returner to which he earned a Pro Bowl nod, more is now being put on Turpin's plate.

And he's hungry for whatever coach Mike McCarthy is cooking up.

With more of an emphasis on having versatility among his offensive group, Turpin has been shifted around to help get used to different positions.

“Turp's a rocket ship with the ball in his hand,” McCarthy said. “He knows exactly where the end zone is, and he knows how to get there. His big-play production is unique, he’s still a young player, he’s taken that next step so we can give him more opportunities, but a dynamic player with the ball in his hand.”

Given that Turpin's skillset is so unique and few players in the league possess his raw speed that, at any given moment, can be used to hit a home run play, McCarthy sees the value in using him as a weapon for Dak Prescott.

But not just as a "gadget guy," either. Our Mike Fisher has often noted that the Cowboys shouldn't use Turpin for "only the jet sweep'' (hello, Lucky Whitehead) as the defense will therefore know what's coming.

And it turns out, as the offensive play-caller, McCarthy has some serious plans for Turpin, and he won't be a one-trick pony.

“You gotta give him the ball,” McCarthy said. “He’ll be in the backfield, in the slot, if you look at the whole receiver group, we’re trying to create opportunities for these guys. Gotta get him the football.

“What you don’t want him to be is a certain personnel group when he enters the game.”

With the Cowboys having a genuine three-headed wideout monster in CeeDee Lamb, Brandin Cooks and Michael Gallup, adding a player with Turpin's skillset could be the trump card in McCarthy's offense.

Now, it's about getting Turpin used to the different positions McCarthy wants him to be deployed in next season.

If used correctly and in the right situations, Turpin could be the fueled-up "rocket ship'' that propels McCarthy's Cowboys to great heights this season.
