'Really Good': Cowboys UDFA Myles Brooks Scouting Report

At the East-West Shrine Bowl, new Dallas Cowboys undrafted free agent Myles Brooks earned multiple mentions as the toughest corner.

The 2023 NFL Draft netted the Dallas Cowboys a talented eight-man class, but also featured the addition of 13 undrafted free agents.

Some post-draft signees have received more attention than others, including fullback Hunter Luepke and linebacker Isaiah Land ... but there's plenty of depth in Dallas' "eighth-round" group.

Take, for instance, former Louisiana Tech cornerback Myles Brooks, who starred at Hendrickson High School in Pflugerville, Tx., before spending three years at Stephen F. Austin and eventually making his way to Ruston in 2022. Brooks, 6-1 and 201 pounds, was described by SI's Draft Bible as a "savvy outside cover corner" and is coming off a season in which All-Conference USA Second Team honors.

The 22-year-old Brooks recorded 29 tackles, three tackles for loss, three interceptions and eight pass breakups this past season, his lone with Louisiana Tech, and was twice named Conference USA Defensive Player of the Week.

After his strong senior season, Brooks was a standout at the East-West Shrine Bowl, one of the premiere all-star games on the pre-draft circuit. Among those who participated in one-on-one portions at practice, Brooks was the lone player to earn multiple mentions as the toughest corner for opposing receivers to face.

But why?

“He’s really good,” New York Giants receiver Bryce Ford-Wheaton told CowboysSI.com. “He’s really fundamentally sound. Longer, bigger, can run - kind of makes your job hard as a receiver.”

There are, however, questions with Brooks' game, largely focused on his athleticism and long-speed. He ran a solid albeit unspectacular 4.56 40-yard dash at the NFL Combine, setting himself up to be selected - but ultimately didn't hear his name called during the draft's 259 selections.

When speaking with former Jackson State standout and now Denver Broncos receiver Dallas Daniels, the size and strength that Brooks possesses came up immediately ... but with that came opportunity for the quick and fluid Daniels.

“He’s a very physical corner,” Daniels said. “More of a bigger corner, so he was very physical. Me being so twitchy, I can get open against those type of guys.”

There's an element of intrigue surrounding Brooks, especially with the Cowboys fresh off a season in which their cornerback depth was greatly challenged.

With Stephon Gilmore partnering Trevon Diggs, Dallas has a pair of established corners, but neither is currently under contract beyond this season, thus opening up the need for long-term solutions on the outside.

Could Brooks be an answer? Only time will tell ... but his physicality, technique and well-rounded skill set make him a "really good" player who might just force his way onto the Cowboys' 53-man roster.
