Cowboys Offense to 'Take a Step Backward!' Under Mike McCarthy Says Ex NFL QB

Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy is now the offensive play-caller, but the move has been met with criticism and doubts as to whether Dallas will be better offensively because of it.

The Dallas Cowboys have undergone several changes this offseason, the most significant being head coach Mike McCarthy taking over the offensive play calling from Kellen Moore.

Under Moore, Dallas was one of the best offenses in football. Now with the Los Angeles Chargers acquiring his services and McCarthy taking over, some have their doubts about the Cowboys moving on from a coordinator who put up points as Moore's offense did.

Former NFL quarterback Tim Hasselbeck is one detractor of McCarthy calling the plays next season, and Hasselbeck doesn't see it ending well in Frisco.

"I think it's going to take a step backward," Hasselbeck said on NFL Live. "I don't understand this talk about how this offense was somehow a disaster under Kellen Moore. You realize, four years he was the offensive coordinator there, there's one team that scored more points in the NFL - it was the Kansas City Chiefs.

"You can run the ball all you want, that's great, but the object is to score points. I think there will be some changes, and I think there will be some growing pains with it, and I don't know if it's a good thing for the Dallas Cowboys."

Was Moore's offense a disaster? We've often make the point that it was far from that, as Dallas was regularly in the upper echelon of teams for points scored, not to mention back-to-back 12-win seasons.

So, we aren't exactly sure where Hasselbeck picked that from, but for the Cowboys, while Moore was good at putting the offense into position to score points, it was more situational play-calling that might have been his undoing - that, combined with the simple fact that McCarthy wants to run a different system this year ... his system.

When looking at the potential differences in the offense with McCarthy compared to Moore, we have already heard from both Dak Prescott and "Big Mike' about understanding "the why'' on each play and doing things a little differently.

So we rather disagree with Hasselbeck's thesis statement here, that McCarthy is trying to recover from a "disaster.'' And we think that Cowboys Nation recognizes that McCarthy will not purposely be trying to score fewer points this year; rather, the idea is an effort to oversee play-calling in a way that allows the offense and defense to complement one another ... so Dallas can ultimately win more games.
