FRISCO - The phrasing being used to describe some level of connection between the Dallas Cowboys and receiver Adam Thielen is ... fascinating.

And ... puzzling.

The report comes from our trusted friend and colleague Jane Slater of NFL Network, who puts it this way: "There is potential interest” from Dallas regarding signing the receiver.

Through no fault of Slater's - she's simply relaying a newsworthy quote from a source - we are left pondering: What does "potential interest'' mean?

Is that the Cowboys' version of "half-pregnant''?

Slater points out that it's "always the economics'' that come into play, and Cowboys Nation has come to accept that. Along with that, there is the argument that the fading Thielen, despite his fine track record, does not quite qualify as the Dallas front office's out-loud promise to acquire an "offensive play-maker with juice'' ...

Though Thielen, the The 10-year veteran released by his home-state Vikings at the start of free agency, remains a TD weapon in the red zone, no doubt.

But will he produce on a level that matches a DeAndre Hopkins or a Brandin Cooks or an Odell Beckham Jr.?

Thielen is now a 32-year-old receiver with a previous average annual salary of nearly $15 million; that of course cannot happen here. It's been suggested that Thielen could end up earning around $10 million APY in Dallas.

We'd bet that's not happening, either ... but not just due to the "economics.'' There is another issue and it has to do with that bugaboo "potential interest.''

That translates into, "We want to see if he will wait ... and/or if teams will wait ... until other ideas have failed and/or he ends up being an affordable third-tier get.''

Dallas is trying to do this same "hang tight'' ploy while juggling free agent linebackers Leighton Vander Esch and Bobby Wagner. And the dangerous flaw in the strategy is clear: Why should Thielen or anybody else of value wait for the Cowboys to finally decide just how "potential'' their "interest'' is?
