Cowboys Scouting: Which Top-10 TE Is Drafted to Dallas?

FRISCO - We've made the argument that the Dallas Cowboys don't "need'' to take a tight end in this NFL Draft. But inside The Star? They are sort of countering by saying, "Yeah, but we want one.''

And so the Dallas depth chart, which presently features second-year guys Jake Ferguston and Peyton Hendershot - who we say both have a chance to be more than just "guys'' - are likely about to have some company.

Our colleague John McMullen asked three former NFL scouts for their top 10 at the position and now we've come come up with a cumulative list. To wit:

1. Michael Mayer, Notre Dame

2. Dalton Kincaid, Utah

3. Luke Musgrave, Oregon State

4. Darnell Washington, Georgia

5. Sam Laporta, Iowa

6. Tucker Kraft, South Dakota State

7. Brenton Strange, Penn State

8. Luke Schoonmaker, Michigan

9. Davis Allen, Clemson

10. Zack Kuntz, Old Dominion

We know that from this list the Cowboys have expressed interest, via visits or otherwise, with Kincaid, Kraft, Tight End, LaPorta, Schoonmaker and Washington.

Additionally, they've met with Cameron Latu (Alabama) and Brayden Willis (Oklahoma), two later-round prospects. Oh, and their affection for Mayer is no secret.

So what is it they want? A "Travis Kelce type'' is what CowboysSI.com has been told. That's probably Kincaid, who is the best route-runner and best down-the-seam threat, according to our scouts. But also available is a "George Kittle type,'' a run-after-catch threat; that's LaPorta. The athletic freak who might be boom-or-bust? That's Washington at 6-7 and 280, with what one of our scouts calls "wild athleticism.''

And who is the most traditional all-around-best prospect, and maybe the best choice if Dallas uses pick No. 26 here? That's Mayer, the Jason Witten-style star of whom McMullen writes, "If this were 1985 Mayer might be one of the best tight end prospects ever. An old school-type who can dominate in both phases. Rarely do you see an in-line option like this.''

It's an outstanding class full of tight ends who are going to fill a lot of "needs'' around the NFL ... and in Dallas, quite likely fill one heavy "want.''
