Stephon Gilmore: Signing with Cowboys 'A Breath of Fresh Air'

Cornerback Stephon Gilmore is thrilled to begin offseason work with the Dallas Cowboys, the team he grew up cheering for

The Dallas Cowboys made a couple of huge moves this offseason, including acquiring cornerback Stephon Gilmore from the Indianapolis Colts.

Gilmore is a two-time All-Pro and won Defensive Player of the Year in 2019 while playing for the New England Patriots. By pairing Gilmore alongside current star Trevon Diggs, the Cowboys should have one of the best corner duos in the league this season. Cowboys fans are thrilled for Gilmore to join the team, and the feeling is mutual.

"I'm excited,'' Gilmore said. "(Coordinator) Dan Quinn is a great coach. They had a great defense last year. I'm just trying to bring my athletic ability on the team and make plays for the defense because it was already good — just trying to make them better.

"Anytime you go somewhere new it's like a breath of fresh air, new opportunity, and [we've] got some good young players. They always keep you going, so I'm looking forward to the opportunity."

With OTAs underway, Gilmore (who day out on Thursday) is getting his feet wet in the Cowboys' defense. He also gets to go head-to-head with CeeDee Lamb and Dallas' other dangerous receivers, which helps him be at his best when the action ramps up.

"Just mental and learning the plays and learning where your teammates are going to be, learning the terminology and stuff like that, and trying to put it into action," Gilmore said. "You can't really compete yet, so, but really try to do all of our other stuff to be ready for training camp."

To add to the excitement, Gilmore and his family have been Cowboys fans for a long time. For the star cornerback, wearing the Cowboys uniform fulfilled a lifelong dream.

"I was very excited [because] I've been a Cowboys fan all my life, growing up as a kid," Gilmore said following the trade in March. "My dad, my cousins, I told my uncle I had a surprise for him. He was so excited. I'm just excited to be in town and see this amazing facility.

"I'm just looking forward to making plays in this Cowboys uniform."
