Cowboys 'Struggle & Fall’ Prediction - By Coach Dave Wannstedt!?

"I don't see how the Cowboys can move up; They could struggle and fall in the other direction.'' - Former Dallas coach Dave Wannstedt.

FRISCO - We frankly have no problem being dismissive of some Dallas Cowboys critics who predict doom and gloom because we sense that they are a) doing a "shock jock'' bit, b) doing without any real insight and/or c) doing it because of some personal dislike or jealousy of "America's Team.''

After all, no team in the last two years has won more regular-season games than coach Mike McCarthy's Cowboys. How "doom'y and gloomy'' can things be?

But what if the dark-cloud prediction comes from a) a plugged-in coach, b) a coach who counts McCarthy as a "friend'' and/or c) a coach who we've known and respected for 33 years?

What id the critic is Dave Wannstedt?

In a piece written for the site 33rd Team, Wannstedt - the Super Bowl-winning coordinator with the 1990's Cowboys who knows plenty about how McCarthy does and owner Jerry Jones and "America's Team'' work - suggests "worry'' and says, "I don’t see how the Cowboys can move up. They could struggle and fall in the other direction.''

Wannstedt's reasoning? Under the headline, "Wannstedt: Cowboys Could Head South,'' Jimmy Johnson's former top aide writes, "The Cowboys have a lot of pressure on them, especially quarterback Dak Prescott and coach Mike McCarthy. ... Mike is a friend of mine and I hope he has success, but it bothered me when you’re the head coach and you say we didn’t run the ball enough. Why not just say we’re going to run more?

"Then when your quarterback throws a lot of interceptions, that’s a problem. So how will the Cowboys solve this?''

Wannstedt cites the departures of Ezekiel Elliott and Dalton Schultz along with Tony Pollard's injury rehab as concerns.

We don't have to agree with Wannstedt's view to nevertheless grant that it comes with gravitas. And we do know that Philadelphia represents an obstacle in the NFC East - a major blockade to Dallas achieving more than it has in the last two years. And in that sense, Wannstedt saying, "I don't see how the Cowboys can move up; They could struggle and fall in the other direction''?

We understand and respect his point.
