Super Bowl QBs Ranked: Who's Better Than Cowboys Troy Aikman & Roger Staubach?
The argument of "greatest of all time" NFL quarterbacks begins and ends with Tom Brady's supreme reign. However, the league boasts many other crazy talented quarterbacks that have shined on the biggest football stage: the Super Bowl.
NFL.com ranked the best 66 quarterbacks to ever start a Super Bowl and three Cowboys landed on the list. Roger Staubach ranked No. 11 in "the best second tier ever" category while No. 16 Troy Aikman is in the "in (or should be in) the Hall-Of-Fame" category.
Staubach is a great "What if?" player, because he didn't become a full-time starter until he was 29 years old. He's still the consensus best quarterback of the 1970s and led the league in passer rating four times. He probably gets downgraded too much for the era in which he played.
As starting quarterback, "Roger the Dodger" led Dallas to the Super Bowl four times with victories in Super Bowl VI and Super Bowl XII. Staubach retired in 1980 with the highest career passer rating in NFL history at the time and was voted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1985.
Aikman won three Super Bowl titles with Dallas, including earning MVP of Super Bowl XXVII. Aikman ended his career as the then- Cowboys' all-time leading passer and was inducted to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2006. "Aikman's peak (1991-96) was impressive, but unfortunately too short," said NFL.com's rankings.
The other quarterbacks tiered with Aikman are: Fran Tarkenton, Ben Roethlisberger, Terry Bradshaw, Joe Namath, Bob Griese, Len Dawson, Jim Kelly, Kurt Warner, Ken Anderson, Ken Stabler and Russell Wilson.
The third Cowboy to make the list? No. 42 Craig Morton among the "crazy talent for a tier this low" category. Morton is the first quarterback to start in the Super Bowl with more than one franchise, leading the Cowboys to Super Bowl V and the Broncos to Super Bowl XII.
Morton, a Super Bowl starter for two different organizations, somehow never made a Pro Bowl despite leading the league in yards per attempt three times.
After an unprecedented career, the recently-retired Brady takes the top spot on the list. Behind Brady is No. 2 Johnny Unitas, No. 3 Joe Montana, No. 4 Peyton Manning and No. 5 Dan Marino. The ranking is based on accomplishment as it stands today.
Patrick Mahomes and Jalen Hurts, the two quarterbacks in starting Super Bowl LVII, also make the list. Mahomes is at No. 10 and climbing while Hurts, who has only 34 career regular-season starts, lands at No. 57. It's not often Mahomes is an underdog ... He and the Kansas City Chiefs will try to pull the upset over the Philadelphia Eagles (1.5-point favorites) in Glendale, Ariz. on Feb. 12 to become Super Bowl LVII Champions.
