Darrell Henderson Jr. (Not Ezekiel Elliott) Visits Browns; Cowboys RB Signing Candidate?

The Dallas Cowboys could make one more move at running back before training camp. Former Los Angeles Rams and Jacksonville Jaguars ball-carrier Darrell Henderson Jr., anyone?

FRISCO - The Dallas Cowboys did not wish to "insult'' Ezekiel Elliott with a low-ball offer, so the released running back remains on the NFL free agency shelf. ... maybe because other teams don't wish to insult the two-time rushing champ, either.

Or maybe because the league suddenly views former Los Angeles Rams and Jacksonville Jaguars running back Darrell Henderson Jr. as being superior to Elliott.

It is difficult to fathom, but the facts are the facts: Just as with the Buffalo Bills signing of Latavius Murray, the optics here leave you assuming that teams making non-Zeke moves consider him inferior to the names in the news.

Is Murray better than Elliott? That's what the Bills (situationally, at least) are saying.

Is Henderson better than Elliott? That's what the Cleveland Browns are essentially saying, as this week they hosted Henderson for a visit ... while still passing on the idea of bringing Elliott, the former Ohio State superstar, "home.''

Meanwhile, Dallas is saying nice things about newcomer vet Roland Jones, about Malik Davis and about rookie Deuce Vaughn as backups to starter Tony Pollard. And the likelihood is that the trio will gets its shot, at OTA's and minicamps, before the Cowboys pull a big trigger.

But there are reasons to consider Darrell Henderson Jr. He has some pedigree, as a former third-rounder. He started at running back for the Rams during the 2020 and 2021 seasons, including the year in which they won Super Bowl LVI. He gave them solid numbers during those two seasons, starting in 21 of his 27 appearances totaling 624 yards and five touchdowns in each of those years.

He has also established that he can be a big-play guy. And he's still just 25. Oh, and in terms of locker-room fit? It so happens that he and Pollard starred together in college at Memphis, all of which adds up to us saying this is a kick-the-tires idea during the Cowboys break between these OTAs and the next team gathering.
