FRISCO - We have tried to say this politely, and so have the Dallas Cowboys. We have tried to say it respectfully and so have the Dallas Cowboys. We have tried to say it firmly and now, as it regards this "story that won't go away'' involving a re-signing of Ezekiel Elliott, and finally the Dallas Cowboys are saying it the same way.

"I circled back to one of my sources today and was told quite frankly they're just not thinking about (re-signing Elliott)," our friend Jane Slater of NFL Network said this week on "NFL Total Access."

Slater is echoing what she's already reported, and what we've already reported. Why does she feel obliged to cover it again? Why do we feel obliged to cover it again? Because of the overwhelming number of reports emanating from people not inside The Star who continue to insist that a reunion is in play.

This is a tough pill to swallow for all involved, because Zeke is a great teammate (everybody from Dak Prescott to Troy Aikman has endorsed the idea of his return if only for that reason) and, as of 2022, still a contributor. But the league obviously views the released two-time NFL rushing champ as a declining running back In 15 games last season, he rushed for a career-low 876 yards on 231 attempts (3.8 yards per carry).

Is the 27-year-old Elliott done with football? That's certainly not his plan. He continues to work out vigorously here in Frisco, sometimes partnering up with Prescott and his Cowboys buddies. When will he get another chance? As the Cowboys move on to Tony Pollard as the full-time guy, and as they go to training camp hoping some combination of Malik Davis, Ronald Jones, Rico Dowdle and Deuce Vaughn can fill the running backs room, Slater again reiterates what she (and we) have already made clear.

"When I asked if there was a situation where they would bring him back, it sounded like the same answer I've gotten from a number of teams,'' Slater said. "It would basically require another injury to another one of their running backs.''
