Micah Parsons Missing Cowboys Workouts Amid Position Change

Micah Parsons, the All-Pro do-everything defensive star, is revealing that he has essentially missed the Cowboys voluntary workouts here inside The Star this spring, though not for any reason of discontent.

FRISCO - Dallas Cowboys “Lion-backer” Micah Parsons might soon have to be referred to as “EDGE rusher” if his comments about his future in coordinator Dan Quinn’s defense do indeed reflect the team’s 2023 plan.

Parsons, the All-Pro do-everything defensive star, is revealing that he has essentially missed the team’s voluntary workouts here inside The Star this spring, though not for any reason of discontent.

Rather, he hasn’t attended the offseason program sessions because he is instead choosing to work in Austin, separate from the team, where he is focusing on picking up weight and adding strength in order to play more defensive end in 2023. …

Or maybe, as one report phrases it, to make the move to the defensive line on a “full-time” basis.

Said Micah: “I just want to increase my explosiveness, add on weight the right way, sharpen it up and just do everything possible that I can do the right way to be the best player I can be.”

Parsons, as a first-round rookie in 2021, finished second in NFL Defensive Player of the Year voting in part due to his versatility. But last season - in part due to the team’s need but also as a bow to his skill set - Quinn lined up the Penn State product at defensive end.

Both alignments produced outstanding results. But late last year, Cowboys coaches did concede that playing on the defensive line took a more physical toll than when Parsons played a great deal of off the ball linebacker.

Parsons, who has been playing at about 245 to 250 pounds, has been working out at The Kollective in Austin during the offseason. When the organized team activities begin May 22, Parsons pledged that he will be back inside The Star.

Parsons also clarified via Twitter what he means by “bulking up,” writing, “Lol people here bulk and think I’m going from 246- 270!! If you seen any of my videos I’m still very slim and I’m putting on good weight! I’m standing at 252 currently! I will not surpass 255 at anytime in my career! This is just me putting on more muscle to carry the load!”

Will this plan help him avoid the nagging injuries that chased him in 2022?

“Those are just growing pains," he said while speaking at a charity event at DFW’s Hat Creek Burgers. "I'm just ready to show what I can do."
