Cowboys Firing Mike McCarthy for Dan Quinn Hints from NFL.com; Too Early? (Yes)

In his State of the 2023 Dallas Cowboys, an NFL staff writer is confident the pressure it building for a deep postseason run to commence. ... or else.

Mike McCarthy has constructed consecutive 12-5 regular seasons at the helm of the Dallas Cowboys. In the wake of this, few franchises would hear murmurs about impending 'heat' from an NFL.com writer concerning the coaching staff, but the Cowboys are getting just that.

Adam Rink released his State of the 2023 Dallas Cowboys on Friday, and the headline said it all: "Heat is on Mike McCarthy, Dak Prescott to lead deep playoff run."

Following a Wild Card loss to San Francisco in 2022 and another season-ending defeat at the hands of the 49ers in 2023's Divisional Round, McCarthy has proven he can lead Dallas to the postseason.

Moreover, he's proven he can win in the postseason, bouncing Tampa Bay in Tom Brady's final NFL game last season. The Cowboys made it to the Divisional Round as one of the final eight teams remaining in the league for the first time since 2018.

McCarthy started his tenure at 6-10 in 2021. Since that time, he has two trips to the postseason, winning a game in his most recent campaign. In every other industry, that's labeled "year-over-year growth.'' And it's a good thing.

For Rink, though, it doesn't seem to suffice. He even insinuates a move to make Dan Quinn the Cowboys' lead man if McCarthy can't put together a postseason run.

"[Quinn's] a valuable person to have on the staff, especially if the heat on McCarthy gets turned up. If you know what I mean," Rink writes. "And if you don't know what I mean, Quinn would be the most obvious in-house option to turn to if things go south in a hurry for McCarthy."

CowboysSI.com is aware, of course, of Quinn's candidacy; indeed, for two straight offseasons, CowboysSI.com has been involved in breaking the stories that have Quinn turning down chances to leave Dallas for head coaching jobs elsewhere.

At the same time, it's early June. Does the Cowboys' 25-11 record since 2021 warrant a national-forum article on the league's official website hinting at the head man being canned for the defensive coordinator? Is this a race to see which media outlet can be first in the "fire McCarthy'' campaign? If so, I won't be writing it. Rink and NFL.com have you covered. And they win the race.
