Tony Romo on Critics: ‘Once You Play QB for Cowboys, You Can Deal With Anything’

Former Dallas Cowboys QB Tony Romo seems unphased by critiques of his broadcasting.

The honeymoon for Tony Romo as the lead color commentator on CBS' NFL coverage officially came to an end during the 2022 season

But Romo says that after spending parts of 10 seasons as the starting quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys, he's not particularly concerned with what critics have to say.

“I think that’s normal,” Romo said Thursday before playing in the second annual Invited Celebrity Classic held at the Las Colinas Country Club. “I think that happens to anybody. Anytime you’re doing something well I think there’s always going to be that. It’s just the arc type of someone’s career. It’s happened to me a few times before, and that’s a good thing.

"That stuff doesn’t affect me, really once you play quarterback for the Cowboys you can deal with anything. ... You got to remember there’s always someone’s opinion there.''

In defense of Romo's critics, they apparently aren't the only ones who think he's taken a step back as Jim Nantz's right-hand man since he received rave reviews in his rookie season as a broadcaster in 2018.

Back in February, Andrew Marchand of The New York Post reported that key executives at CBS "staged something of an intervention" with Romo last offseason. While the network pushed back against that characterization, someone wanted that information out there. And it certainly wasn't someone in Romo's camp.

As a broadcaster, you need to strike the balance between having thick skin but making sure you're also willing to hear constructive criticism. But someone who is making $17 million a year to be a game analyst may not be especially inclined to make drastic adjustments to the style that earned him such a lucrative contract.

Romo, who is however on record as saying he does tinker with his style in efforts to improve, said, "One hundred other people ... come up to you and tell you they love you. You’re not going to please everyone. I do think at the end of the day there’s a lot more people that really appreciate what we do, and I think CBS does a great job with their broadcast team.”
