The Dallas Cowboys, and their quarterback Dak Prescott, need to rebound on Monday Night Football against the Los Angeles Chargers.

The West Coast circuit has not gone well for Dallas, with its two losses coming against a middling Arizona Cardinals team and the San Francisco 49ers, who may be the best in football. That journey will continue in Week 6 when America’s Team heads to Los Angeles.

Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert won’t make Monday night an easy win, but it feels like every game will be a must-win until the Cowboys find themselves on the verge of a Victory Monday.

Owner Jerry Jones, who turned 81 on Friday, spoke about his quarterback, specifically the offense that he’s played a big part in building.

“He grasps this offense. He’s a part of the construction of this offense,” Jones said. “He grasps it as well as anybody we’ve ever had play the position.”

That’s high praise coming from someone who’s witnessed multiple Hall of Famers under center and some guy named Tony Romo, who was pretty good, too. That doesn’t mean it’s irrationally bullish.

However, Jones and the Cowboys allowed offensive coordinator Kellen Moore to leave for (poetically) the Chargers. Prescott and head coach Mike McCarthy collaborated on the “Texas Coast” offense, heavy on quick game concepts and, apparently, letting the defense win games for them.

The quick game concepts were clicking early in the year, but San Francisco’s dominating 42-10 performance was a gut punch many fear will still be felt as the season moves along.

Even so, Jones stood behind his quarterback.

“He’s got very, very, very top skills,” Jones said, on 105.3 The Fan. “He has great experience. He’s a winner.”

Some may consider that final comment a half-truth. Playoff success has been evasive in Dallas for more than two decades, but getting there hasn’t been as much of an issue. Prescott has a career 64-38 record but is 2-4 in the playoffs.

Wins can be a silly way to judge a quarterback, but as a barometer for mounting pressure, it’s undeniable he hasn’t done enough to bring home a Lombardi Trophy. At least not yet.

Jones’ conclusion is as steadfast as ever, bucking a reputation for demanding the world and more from his stars. It’s not unjust, merely surprising to some.

“We really have an asset in terms of the QB position in our pursuit of getting in a Super Bowl.”
