The San Francisco 49ers have been a thorn in the side of the Dallas Cowboys, knocking them out of the playoffs in each of the last two seasons.0

However, those wins haven't come easy for San Francisco. Both games went down to the wire, and could've easily gone the other way if just a few more bounces went Dallas' way.

With the two teams facing off again on Sunday night, these previous matchups have come into the spotlight once again. As the most recent game in the series, the 49ers' 19-12 Divisional Round win at Levi's Stadium has been especially prevalent. Despite the 49ers getting the win, quarterback Brock Purdy called this game the toughest of his young career.

"They were a really good defense and, like I said, there were times where just the pass rush or my rhythm, something just felt off in that game," Purdy said. "And they did a good job of just getting me offset with some little things and just sort of made me rush some things. And I feel like I didn't get in a good rhythm to process just what we had going on."

In this game, Purdy completed 19 of 29 passes for 219 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions while being sacked twice. His quarterback rating of 87.4 was the lowest of his career so far, not counting a garbage-time appearance against the Kansas City Chiefs last season.

"They're a good defense," Purdy said. "They do some really good things up front. Secondary is really good, too. And so yeah, just looking at that game and sort of just putting ourselves back into what was at stake, as a playoff game, just the rivalry of the organizations and understanding what's at stake for this Sunday, too."

Both teams are looking just as good, if not better than last year, so Sunday's showdown holds huge implications in the NFC playoff picture. If the previous meeting is anything to go by, Purdy is expecting another slugfest under the lights.

"In this kind of game, when you got two really good defenses on both sides of the ball, it's like, man, how can you eliminate the turnovers, play smart, and when you get in the red zone, execute and be willing to actually score touchdowns," Purdy said. "Obviously, the field goals are great, and getting points are great, but to win these kind of games, man, we got to score touchdowns."
