12 Winners, 5 Losers From Eagles Preseason Loss to Patriots

The Eagles had a lot of winners in the second game of the preseason, certainly a better performance than they showed in the first game.

In this story:

That certainly was a fun showing for the Philadelphia Eagles on Saturday night.

Even though the Eagles lost the second preseason game to the New England Patriots, the result did not matter. This game was about the second team putting out a better performance than Week 1 of the preseason -- particularly on offense.

The Eagles certainly accomplished that, and figured out a lot about their football team heading into the final week of training camp. The 53-man roster deadline is just seven days away, and some spots are sealed.

There were a lot of winners in Week 2 of the preseason. Here were the winners and losers against the Patriots.

Winners

Tanner McKee: The race for QB2 may belong to McKee after he outperformed Andy Dalton on Saturday night. McKee went 16-of-22 for 173 yards and two touchdowns (125.8 rating) coming in for Dalton, moving the second and third team offense down the field. He went 5-of-6 for 64 yards on third down, with a touchdown pass (150.7 rating). McKee should be the front runner for QB2 heading into the final week.

Carson Steele: If the Eagles were looking for a fullback, they may have found one in Steele. The free agent pickup showcased his pass-catching skills on playaction, having six catches for 84 yards and a touchdown -- four catches for 54 yards on third down. Steele also had soem hard runs and highlight hurdles. He played his way into roster consideration.

Ty Robinson: There aren't any more doubts whether Robinson can make the 53-man roster, not after the first half he had on Saturday. Robinson had four pressures, two sacks, and three quarterback hits -- and was arguably the best player on the field. The Eagles should be set at defensive tackle, as the No. 5 spot belongs to Robinson.

Darius Cooper: The only time the Eagles pass game moved when Andy Dalton was at quarterback was when he threw to Cooper. Dalton's only three completions were to Cooper, who finished with three catches for 44 yards. Cooper had a bounce-back performance from the first preseason game and found his way open several times in this game. He may have locked up his roster spot.

Will Shipley: The RB3 job belonged to Shipley well before the game started, but he sealed the position with a strong night running the football. Shipley had 51 rushing yards in the first quarter, hitting the hole hard behind impressive blocking from the second team offensive line. Shipley averaged 2.91 yards after contact, showcasing how efficient he was running the ball.

Willie Lampkin: An impressive performance from Lampkin, who just bullied the Patriots up front throughout the first half. No matter if Lampkin is at guard or center, he's a wrecking ball in the run game. Lampkin has a spot on this roster and solidifies the Eagles' interior offensive line depth.

Jake Majors: We finally see what the Eagles like with Majors, as he was a force in run blocking at right guard. He also had a good night in pass protection too, earning second team reps for a reason. Majors may be the front runner for the final offensive line spot.

Joshua Weru: There's one move Weru has in his back pocket, and he used that to earn his first sack Saturday night. Weru demonstrated his quickness off teh edge and how he's giving the Eagles something to think about in regards to the final roster. It may be difficult for the Eagles to get Weru through waivers.

Jeremiah Trotter Jr.: Trotter Jr. is just too good for these preseason games, but someone has to play. He had five tackles and a sack in just 20 snaps, commanding the defense at the MIKE. Trotter Jr. is going to have a significant role on this defense this year, even if he's not a starter.

Shaun Wade: Another game Wade had a forced fumble, his second in two preseason games. Wade finds his way to the football, had his two hustle plays led to two second half turnovers for the Eagles. Wade isn't making this roster, but there may be a spot for him on the practice squad.

Deontae Lawson: The Eagles are insanely deep at linebacker, deep enough Lawson is a roster long shot -- no matter how well he plays. Lawson had five tackles, three solo, finding his way to the ball carrier and making plays at first sight. He should be on the practice squad.

Brandon George: Two special teams tackles in just his second game with the Eagles. Not bad for a player who just joined the team a week ago. If the Eagles want special teams depth on kickoff coverage, George may be their guy.

Losers

Andy Dalton: There has to be an explanation why Dalton wa sthe QB2 over McKee for so long. Dalton has failed to seize this job over McKee and may have lost it Saturday night. Dalton was 3-of-10 for 44 yards and didn't complete a pass to anyone other than Darius Cooper. He should have also thrown two interceptions in the game as well. Another bad performance from Dalton may have cost him his roster spot with the Eagles.

Ambry Thomas: A long shot to make the roster, Thomas was beaten badly on a 69-yard touchdown pass from Tommy DeVito to Kyle Williams. DeVito struggles to throw the ball downfield to begin with, so that's already a poor mark for Thomas. Williams just beat Thomas too easily, which can't happen for a player batting for a spot on the practice squad.

Cole Payton: If you knew when Payton entered the game, congratulations. He entered the game with just 57 seconds left in the contest, playing garbage time and trying to run out the clock. Payton couldn't even do that, as he fumbled the ball on his third snap. Highly unlikely Payton is the QB3 -- or makes the 53-man roster.

Michael Jordan: Stuck on the third team at guard, it's hard to see Jordan making this roster. Jordan allowed a pressure late in the game, a 5.6% pressure rate allowed per dropback. Willie Lampkin appears to be a lock and Jake Majors is ahead of Jordan. Wouldn't be surprising if Jordan isn't on the roster by next Saturday.

Micah Morris: The sixth-round pick is battling for a roster spot at guard, and allowed a 7.1% pressure rate on Saturday. He's behind Willie Lampkin and Jake Majors on the depth chart too, as the Eagles may sneak him on the practice squad. Morris has potential, but other young lineman have just outplayed him.
