Giants add Austin Walter to their practice squad

The Giants signed running back Austin Walter to their practice squad Wednesday.
Walter, 5-foot-8, 202 pounds, played his college ball at Rice. He went undrafted this year but was signed by the 49ers in May. Walter participated in the 49ers training camp this summer but was waived on August 31.
He was part of a workout ground hosted by the Giants earlier this month.
During his four-year college career, Walter participated in 49 games, rushing for 1,744 yards on 345 carries (5.1 yards per carry), and 13 touchdowns.
He also caught 79 passes for 803 yards and five touchdowns and finished with 2,547 all-purpose yards on 424 plays from scrimmage.
Walter, whose best season stat-wise was in 2018 when he finished with 564 yards rushing on 133 carries, also has experience as a kickoff returner. In four years of college, he returned 71 kickoffs for 1,548 yards (21.8 average).
This summer with the 49ers, Walter finished as the team's second=-best rusher (36 carries for 125 yards and 1 touchdown). He also caught six passes for 490 yards, with a long of 9 yards.
The Giants currently have two running backs—Saquon Barkley and Wayne Gallman—and fullback Eli Penney on the 53-man roster.
Walter, who fills the practice squad vacancy that was created with the waiving of tight end C.J. Conrad, joins fellow undrafted rookie Jon Hilliman as the two running backs on the Giants practice squad.
