Giants Re-sign Pending ERFA Lawrence Cager

New York adds to its tight end room by bringing back a familiar face from last year.

The New York Giants have signed tight end Lawrence Cager, who was set to be an exclusive rights free agent on March 15, to an undisclosed contract believed to be for the minimum.

Cager, 6-foot-5 and 220 pounds, is a converted receiver who played his college ball at Miami for three seasons, where he had 45 receptions for 681 yards and ten receiving touchdowns. He transferred to Georgia for his final season and posted 33 receptions for 476 yards and four receiving touchdowns.

Cager signed as an undrafted free agent with the Jets following the 2020 draft. After not making their 53-man roster, he signed to the Jets practice squad and received two standard elevations to the 53-man roster that year. After dealing with a hamstring injury that landed him on practice squad IR, he was eventually added to the Jets roster on December 12.

Cager failed to make the Jets roster the following year and went on to sign with the Clevland Browns practice squad in October 2021. In January 2022, he returned to the Jets on a reserve/futures deal but was waived on October 15, 2022.

Three days later, he signed with the Giants practice squad, where he received three standard practice squad elevations before being signed to the 53-man roster on November 22, 2022.

In six regular-season games for the Giants (three starts), he caught 13 of 18 balls for 118 yards and a touchdown but wasn't impressive as a blocker, as he often lacked intensity in finishing his blocks. Cager's best game with the Giants came in Week 18 against the Eagles, when he caught eight out of 10 pass targets for 69 yards, showing an ability to get open, read defenses, and haul in tough passes.

Cager's base salary is believed to be $820,000 for 2023.
