Giants Acquire Isaiah Simmons from Cardinals via Trade

New York adds depth and versatility to its linebacker unit with a former Arizona Cardinals first-round draft pick.

According to a report by ESPN's Adam Schefter, the New York Giants are acquiring linebacker Isaiah Simmons from the Arizona Cardinals in exchange for a 2024 seventh-round draft pick.

Simmons, the eighth overall pick out of Clemson in the 2020 NFL draft, is a versatile chess piece capable of giving a team snaps at multiple positions. According to Pro Football Focus, he's played 432 snaps on the defensive line, 1,077 in the box, 63 at free safety, 641 in the slot, 65 at corner, and 432 as a wide rusher.

The 6-foot-4, 238-pounder has appeared in 50 games with 37 starts, and his regular season totals include 258 career tackles, 13 tackles for loss, 11 quarterback hits, four interceptions (one returned for a touchdown), 16 pass breakups, seven forced fumbles, and 7.5 sacks.

Simmons is in the final year of his rookie contract. According to Over the Cap, he carries a  base salary is $1.01 million, and he was due a $2.417 million roster bonus on August 1, but his total cap hit to the Giants should be just $1.01 million.

Between his versatility--he figures to play a hybrid safety/linebacker role in the Giants defense--and low cost, the Giants have landed themselves a young player who can add dimension to their defense.
