Giants GM Joe Schoen Offers Updates on Saquon Barkley, Dexter Lawrence Contract Talks

Talks with representatives from both players should be resuming again in the coming days.

New York Giants general manager Joe Schoen revealed after the 2023 NFL draft that he had recent contact with running back Saquon Barkley's representation.

"We had conversations last week," Schoen said in response to a question regarding the topic.

When asked to clarify if that meant they re-opened negotiations after pulling their initial offer to the running back off the table following the assignment of the franchise tag, Schoen said, "Touching base. We'll circle up after the draft. See if it makes sense or not through dialogue."

A week ago, at his pre-draft press briefing, Schoen said that he hadn't had conversations with Barkley's representation in almost a month. The running back has refused to sign the franchise tag and therefore is not obligated to attend the team's off-season program, which began April 17.

Head coach Brian Daboll asked a question about potentially reducing Barkley's snaps now that they added running back Eric Gray in the draft, declined to address the topic, reminding reporters of the current date and adding, "We'll cross that bridge when we get to it."

Schoen, meanwhile, plans to circle back with Barkley's agent, Kim Miale of Roc Nation Sports, once things settle down in the coming days and will, based on the dialogue he has with Miale, determine if it is worth putting a revised extension offer back on the table, or if the gap between the two sides is still too wide to close.

"We'll talk this coming week now that the draft is over. We'll reconvene and see if it makes sense or not through dialogue with his representative," Schoen said.

The Giants general manager also confirmed that it was the "same deal" regarding Dexter Lawrence's contract talks.

"His representation had a lot of prospects in the draft, and we were focused on the draft in our meetings. Next week, things will calm down a little bit, and we'll circle back up with everybody," Schoen said.
