Giants head coach Pat Shurmur said there is a “strong possibility” the team will not have receiver Sterling Shepard this weekend when they visit the Detroit Lions.

Shepard, who has been in the league's concussion protocol since suffering his second concussion of the season in the Giants' Week 5 loss to the Vikings, has been able to practice on a limited basis the last couple of weeks in what's a positive sign for him moving forward.

However, Shepard is believed to have been donning the yellow "no contact" jersey during practices. Until he reaches the point where he can shed the yellow jersey and go through an entire week of taking full practice reps, Shepard is unlikely to be cleared to play in a game.

Sunday's game against the Lions would mark the third straight game Shepard has had to miss because of a concussion and the fourth game this season because of the injury. He missed the team's Week 2 loss to Buffalo after suffering a concussion against the Cowboys in a Week 1 loss.

The Giants are hoping to have Shepard back for their Monday night home game against the Cowboys on November 4.

In other injury news, Shurmur said that running back Saquon Barkley will likely need to have his practice reps managed the rest of this season. Although the running back returned last week from a high ankle sprain that cost him three games,

Barkley appeared to tweak his ankle during the second half of last week's loss to the Cardinals, so the decision to manage his practice reps will hopefully help keep the second-year running back as fresh as possible moving forward.

Cornerback Corey Ballentine (concussion) didn't practice Thursday. He was on the side with a trainer during the part of practice open to the media.
