Giants Retain Offensive, Defensive Coordinators

New York's entire coaching staff is expected to remain intact following word of Mike Kafka and Wink Martindale being passed over for head coaching jobs.

Just days after New York Giants defensive coordinator Wink Martindale was eliminated from consideration for the Indianapolis Colts head coaching position, now comes official word that offensive coordinator Mike Kafka, who had been under consideration for the Arizona head coaching job, has also been passed over.

The Colts hired Eagles offensive coordinator Shane Steichen for their vacancy, and the Cardinals Eagles defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon, both hirings coming as a blow to the defending NFC Conference Champions who lost Super Bowl 57 to the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday.

But as disappointing as the news might be personally to Kafka and Martindale, each of whom aspires to be head coaches one day, the news is good for the Giants, who will look to build on their surprising 9-7-1 record from 2022 with both coordinators, who are expected to be assisted with the same position coaches, in place.

The Giants, who have a healthier cap situation and who are projected to have 11 picks in this year's draft, are expected to fill in some of the roster holes that hamstrung both coordinators last year. With the right moves, the Giants are expected to be even better than they were this past season when they qualified for their first postseason berth since 2016 and won the Wild Card round before being eliminated by the Eagles in the divisional round.

While the Giants can certainly breathe a sigh of relief in knowing that they'll have both coordinators back, it might just be a matter of time before they lose one or both of them in the future.

The 35-year-old Kafka was pegged for four of the five job openings in this cycle, the Cardinals, Colts, Texans, and Panthers--while the 59-year-old Martindale drew serious interest from the Colts.
