Notes and quotes from the New York Giants 21-16 loss to the Detroit Lions...

Dany Dollars Takes Charge

Giant quarterback Daniel Jones might have been given the night off, but that didn't mean the workaholic signal caller sat back and relaxed.

Head coach Brian Daboll revealed that Jones organized a workout for those teammates that weren't going to play in the team's preseason opener against the Lions.

Yeah, they want to get a good workout in," Daboll said after the game. "Danny organized a workout with guys that weren’t going to play.”

Jones is no stranger when it comes to organizing workouts. He's done so ever since being named the starter, and his workouts are generally well-attended. Although there were no specific details regarding this latest one, one can only assume that he had a number of his receiving targets join him.

Not So Special Teams

The Giants special teams got off to another rocky start thanks to continued mental errors.

Just before Lions receiver Maurice Alexander's 95-yard punt return, the Giants were flagged for a delay of game penalty when they only had ten men on the field. Then when Alexander made his way to daylight following Jamie Gillan's 67-yard punt, the momentum easily swung to the Lions, who following the two-point conversion after the touchdown, closed the Giants' lead to two points.

"That falls on me," head coach Brian Daboll said. "Give them credit; it was a heck of a play. We’ll look at it on tape, but usually, when you give up those long punt returns, it’s a momentum changer.”

Praise for a Rookie

Seventh-round draft pick Jordon Riley is getting a good opportunity to show the coaching staff what he can do with guys ahead of him on the defensive line depth chart, either not having played on Friday or injured.

Riley only recorded one assisted tackle on the stat sheet, but the former Oregon Duck never looked out of place or intimidated by what was happening around him.

"(Giants Defensive Line Coach Andre Patterson) Dre and (Giants Assistant Defensive Line Coach) Bryan Cox do a great job with the defensive line, and you see continual improvement from whether it be (Giants DL) Dexter (Lawrence II) or (Giants DL Leonard Williams) Leo or some of the young guys," Daboll said when asked about Riley.

"This is one of them. I think he’s taking to the coaching; he’s doing a good job listening to the older players. I think he’s made some strides from the beginning of camp to where he is now. We’ll see how it translates on the field here.”

Injury Update

Daboll said he didn't know the severity of the injuries suffered by cornerback Cor’Dale Flott (abdomen) and receiver Collin Johnson (knee). Daboll did mention that defensive back Nick McCloud also got hit in the stomach, but again, he didn't know the extent of it.
