The New York Giants have promoted quarterback Tommy DeVito to the 53-man roster, as expected.

DeVito, who was out of standard practice squad elevations, will provide depth at the quarterback position where starter Daniel Jones, although cleared for contact after missing three games with a neck injury, is due to return to the lineup. In contrast, backup Tyrod Taylor, who suffered a rib injury last week, could miss time.

DeVito originally signed with the Giants as an undrafted free agent on April 29. After playing with the Syracuse Orange from 2017 to 2021, he entered the transfer portal and played his senior season with the Illinois Fighting Illini.

During his time in the Big Ten Conference, DeVito thrived in his new school and put up remarkably efficient numbers, including a 69.6 completion percentage, 15 touchdown passes against just four interceptions, and six rushing touchdowns. The New Jersey native's performance, in part, helped Illinois improve from a 5-7 record in 2021 to an 8-5 record in 2022 and a ReliaQuest Bowl berth.

A native of Essex County, New Jersey, the 24-year-old took most of the preseason reps for the Giants, completing 43 of 64 passes for 453 yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions. He didn't make the initial 53-man roster but has been on the practice squad since the start of the season, having been elevated in each of the last three weeks.

The Giants cut receiver/return specialist Gunner Olszewski on Monday to open a roster spot for DeVito. Olszewski is expected to land back on the Giants practice squad.
