As expected would be the case, the New York Giants have exercised the fifth-year option on left tackle Andrew Thomas's rookie deal ahead of the deadline to do so.

Thomas, entering the fourth year of his contract this coming season, would be scheduled to earn $14.175 million in 2024 if he plays on the option year. That amount is based on a scale that rewards players for playtime and Pro Bowl berths.

Thomas has been a Day 1 starter for the Giants, thus landing in the play-time bracket. But because he has been snubbed for the Pro Bowl, his option year earnings, which would have increased to $16.6 million, will remain in the play-time category, as outlined by Over the Cap.

Thomas, who had a rocky season as a rookie, has consistently improved every year since blossoming into one of the league's best young left tackles. According to Pro Football Focus, Thomas allowed just 23 pressures last season, four of which the popular analytics credited as sacks.

Thomas, the fourth overall pick in the 2020 draft out of Georgia and the first offensive tackle drafted that year, also finished fourth overall and in pass blocking among all offensive linemen overall according to PFF's blocking grades,

Eventually, the Giants would like to lock up Thomas to a long-term deal. However, that might have to wait until next off-season as New York is currently trying to secure the long-term services of defensive lineman Dexter Lawrence, who is otherwise set to play on his rookie year option, and running back Saquon Barkley.

According to Over the Cap, the Giants are last in the league in cap space, with their total and effective space being in the red.
