New York Giants rookie receiver Bryce Ford-Wheaton suffered a torn ACL in Saturday's preseason finale against the Jets and will miss the 2023 regular season.

Ford-Wheaton, an undrafted free agent out of West Virginia, was in the mix for a spot at receiver on the Giants' 53-man roster before his injury. While inconsistent as a receiver, the Giants had seen some potential special teams value in the youngster given his length and size, combined with his ability to get downfield as a gunner.

Those characteristics appealed to Giants special teams coordinator Thomas McGaughey, who said of Ford-Wheaton, “The obvious with Bryce is just size, speed. He’s 6-4, 225 pounds, or 230, whatever he is, and runs 4.40. Those measurables are pretty special.

“Whenever you can get — and with him, he’s a very mature rookie. He goes about his business very professionally, he comes into meetings, he works his tail off, he’s attentive, and he wants to learn. So, when you have those qualities — smart, tough, dependable — and just those physical attributes, he has a big upside, I think.”

The Giants liked Ford-Wheaton enough to sign him to a three-year undrafted free-agent contract worth $2.715 million, including a $20,000 signing bonus and $236,000 in guaranteed money. Ford-Wheaton will count for $456,666 against the team's 2023 salary cap.
