Giants Waiver Wire and Practice Squad Tracker

Awarded via Waivers
WR Cody Core (Bengals): Core was selected in the sixth round of the 2016 draft by the Bengals out of Mississippi.
Standing 6-foot-3 and weighing in at 205 pounds, Core appeared in 35 games with seven starts for the Bengals. He's caught 30 passes for 360 yards and one touchdown, but is probably better known for his special teams play.
What It Could Mean: The Giants carried six receivers on their initial 53-man roster. The arrival of Core could mean that rookie Darius Slayton is headed to IR, where after six weeks if his ailing hamstring is healed, he can be designated as one of two players "allowed to return" from injured reserve.
Or this could mean that Alonzo Russell, who was a special teams standout (and who is a tallish receiver himself) could be on his way out.
Corresponding Move: Alonzo Russell, who impressed with his special teams play all preseason, ends up being the corresponding move.
According to NFL rules, a player cannot be signed to a practice squad for more than three seasons. Russell has been on the practice squads of the Bengals, Cards, and Giants; as a result, he is no longer eligible for PSQ consideration.
T Eric Smith (Jets): Smith (6-foot-4, 308 pounds) originally signed as an undrafted free agent with Miami in May 2017 out of Virginia.
He initially made the Dolphins roster as a right tackle but landed on injured reserve in October of 2017. TheDolphins brought him back off IR in December of that year but would waive him a year on September 1, 2018.
Smith had a short stint with the Patriots practice squad before being signed by the Jets in December of last year. He was waived by the Jets as part of their roster transactions to get from 90 to 53 this year.
Smith has yet to appear in an NFL game.
What It Could Mean: Brian Mihalik is likely the guy to watch here as far as his roster spot is concerned. Mihalik never quite looked comfortable playing offensive tackle and although head coach Pat Shurmur expressed a fondness for Mihalik last week, he's in no way a long-term lock for the roster.
Corresponding Roster Move: Brian Mihalik was waived to make room for Smith.
