Daniel Jones Contract Talks Reportedly Heating Up

In this story:
With less than 48 hours to go before the NFL franchise/transition tag deadline, face-to-face talks between the New York Giants and representatives for quarterback Daniel Jones continue to heat up.
The NFL Network's Mike Garafolo reported that Jones's reps planned to travel to New Jersey to continue face-to-face discussions with general manager Joe Schoen on a multiyear deal for the fifth-year quarterback.
Possible good sign for the #Giants and Daniel Jones: Sources say Jones’ agents are traveling to Jersey today to meet with the #Giants in person after talking many times at the Scouting Combine. A little more than a day to go before the franchise-tag deadline. Still time.

Various reports have said that the Jones is seeking upwards of $45 million per year, while the Giants are reportedly looking to pay between $32 and $35 million. The most likely scenario is that the two sides will meet somewhere in the middle, reaching a base APY of around $37-$38 million that can grow upwards of $40+ million if certain incentives are met.

If the two sides can agree on a new deal before the 4 p.m. ET Tuesday deadline for the tag, that would free the Giants to use the tag on running back Saquon Barkley. It would also allow the Giants to structure the first year of Jones's new deal for less than half of the $32.4 million non-exclusive franchise tag for quarterbacks, which in turn would allow for Schoen to add additional upgrades via free agency at key positions such as linebacker, interior defensive line, and safety.
SI.com's Albert Breer reported Monday that the two sides have "closed the financial gap significantly," which further offers hope of a deal getting done before Tuesday's soft deadline.
As part of @TheMMQB this week—The @Giants and Daniel Jones' agents have closed the financial gap significantly. They met multiple times in Jersey. They'll meet again today in hopes of doing something ahead of Tuesday's franchise-tag deadline.

Jones has been in the team's facility at least once since the team was eliminated in the playoffs last season, which Schoen confirmed in his year-end press conference. Jones is also known for spending a lot of time at the facility during the off-season between getting workouts in and watching film, as he's been meticulous with his preparation ever since being drafted sixth overall in 2019.
