Giants Notebook: Daniel Jones okay with sitting and more from Wednesday's practice

Most rookies who are top-10 draft picks are itching to get in the game and show the fan base that they are worthy of their elite draft status.

But for Giants quarterback Daniel Jones, he understands that he has a veteran in front of him in Eli Manning and that his job right now is to sit and learn as much as he can from the veteran.

“Yeah, I think my job right now is to prepare, to improve as much as I can, and control what I can control,” Jones said Wednesday.

“How that plays out, I certainly hope we’re winning a whole lot of games, too.”

Jones is gearing up for what looks to be an extended amount of playing time after last week’s successful single series in which he completed all five of his pass attempts.

He said that his goal is to build off of that and keep his focus, so he doesn’t get too overconfident.

“I don’t think letting that affect your preparation is—I think that’s part of being consistent, is having the same urgency to prepare every week, and I’ve certainly tried to do that so far,” he said.

Roster Moves

The Giants were awarded Johnny Townsend off waivers from the Oakland Raiders and waived rookie Ryan Anderson.

Townsend was a fifth-round draft choice of the Raiders in 2018 when he played in all 16 games. He punted 70 times and was 31st in the NFL with a 42.3-yard gross average and 29th with a 38.3-yard net average. He placed 17 punts inside the 20-yard line. He also ran for 42 yards on a fake punt against the Chargers on Nov. 11.

Townsend, 6-1 and 205 pounds, played in 44 games in four seasons (2013, 2015-17) at the University of Florida. He totaled 240 punts for 11,090 yards (46.2-yard avg.), placed 90 punts inside the opponent’s 20-yard line and had just 22 touchbacks.

He left school as the Gators’ career leader in punts and yardage. Townsend ranks fifth in SEC history in punting yards and tied for ninth in punts and his 46.2 career average ranks first in SEC history.

Also, tight end Scott Simonson was put on waivers but it was more or less a "bookkeeping" move, according to a source who added that Simonson is still on the roster.

Head coach Pat Shurmur said that linebacker Alec Ogletree (calf), and corners Sam Beal (groin) and DeAndre Baker (knee) probably won’t play Friday night against the Bears
