New York Giants defensive lineman Dexter Lawrence II, who is negotiating a long-term deal with the team, is planning to skip the start of the team's off-season program, which begins Monday, per the Daily News.

Lawrence, a team co-captain last season, is coming off the best year of his career in which he posted career highs in tackles (68), sacks (7.5, best on the team), and quarterback hits (28).

Lawrence, the 17th overall pick in the 2019 draft, has also been durable for the Giants, having never missed a game due to injury.

The Giants exercised the option year of Lawrence's contract last year, meaning he'll be due a fully guaranteed $12.4 million salary. However, the Giants and Lawrence's representatives have been working toward a longer-term deal that would provide more financial stability for the 25-year-old and enable the Giants to lower his 2023 cap hit in the process.

General manager Joe Schoen confirmed that the team has had discussions with the Pro Bowler's representatives. But since then, the price to get Lawerence under contract has soared thanks to some of his peers signing long-term deals.

Washington's Daron Payne inked a four-year, $90 million contract with a $28 million signing bonus, $45 million fully guaranteed, and $60 million in total guarantees. Titans defensive lineman Jeffery Simmons also signed a four-year deal worth $94 million, and 49ers defensive lineman Javon Hargrave inked a four-year, $84 million contract earlier this off-season.

Lawrence's absence from the start of the off-season program isn't a big deal at the moment, as the program is voluntary. But unlike running back Saquon Barkley, who also plans to skip the off-season program as he delays signing the franchise tag (thus making him not under contract), Lawrence is still under contract, which means if he skips out on the mandatory minicamp set for June, he is subject to a fine for every day missed.
