Former New York Giants Coach Bill McGovern Dies

Former New York Giants linebackers coach Bill McGovern, most recently with UCLA, died Tuesday after a battle with cancer, the school announced.

The school released a statement on behalf of McGovern's family, which read, in part, "Early this morning, we said goodbye to our beloved father and husband Bill after his long and difficult battle with cancer came to an end. We would like to thank the entire UCLA community for all of the love and support you gave to Bill and our entire family during this very difficult struggle."
McGovern, born in Oradell, New Jersey, had been with the Giants during the 2016-2019 seasons, spanning two head coaching regimes (Ben McAdoo and Pat Shurmur). Before joining the Giants, The 60-year-old McGovern had been with the Eagles as their outside linebacker coach under head coach Chip Kelly.
McGovern began his coaching career in 1985 with Penn. He made stops at Holy Cross, UMass, Boston College, and Pittsburgh before ultimately landing in the NFL with Kelly and the Eagles.
After leaving the Giants, McGovern coached at Nebraska for a season before returning to the NFL with the Bears in 2021 as their inside linebackers coach. He then joined Kelly at UCLA in 2022 as a defensive coordinator before transitioning to the director of football administration role in 2023.

McGovern is survived by his wife, Colleen, and daughters Amanda, Delainey, and Mackenzie.
