Giants Push Back Rookie Report Date for Training Camp

Rookies will report July 23 instead of July 21.

Eventually, the New York Giants will hit the field for the first time this summer as a team for training camp. But whether that will be July 28, as scheduled, or another date, well that remains to be seen.

The Giants rookies were initially scheduled to report to East Rutherford for the start of training camp on July 21; however, that date has now been pushed back to July 23.

The Daily News was first with the report of the change in dates.

Because of the coronavirus, the Giants have not only been unable to fit their new faces for their equipment, they also haven’t been able to wrap up contracts, a process that usually gets done by the end of the spring OTAs. 

Thus far, the only Giants rookie who has reportedly signed his contract is linebacker Tae Crowder, the last of the Giants’ seventh-round draft picks and this year’s Mr. Irrelevant.

Not only will the rookies need to be fitted for their equipment, but they will also have to undergo a complete training camp physical and be tested for COVID-19. 

The Giants’ current training camp roster lists 18 players with the “R” designation, including the draft picks and undrafted free agents. There are eight other players credited with one year of experience who are expected to be part of that initial reporting group.

While 26 players doesn’t sound like a lot, the administrated stuff, including the physicals and testing, could take up the better part of a day if not longer—and that doesn’t include any onboarding that head coach Joe Judge might have planned for the rookies.

A source told Giants Country that the Giants will set up shop this summer at MetLife Stadium, which has multiple locker rooms that will allow the Giants to spread out to meet social distancing requirements. Also, the team will be making use of suites within the stadium for smaller group meetings, which will, again, follow social distancing mandates.

All players, coaches, and staff will be required to wear masks while in the stadium.

The players and coaches will be bused over to the Quest Diagnostics Training Center fields for practice only and then bused back to the stadium where they will also take their meals during camp.
