Giants Week 4 Injury Report & Impact

Depth at linebacker, running back and receiver are concerning.

The Giants no doubt knew that their injury report would feature a hit at running back and inside linebacker, but knowing doesn't make the situation any easier to swallow.

Running back Saquon Barkley (high ankle sprain) will miss anywhere from 4-8 weeks.

According to ESPN's Chris Mortensen, the Giants star running back was to have traveled to see specialist Dr. Robert Anderson on Wednesday for an additional opinion regarding his prognosis and recovery time.

With Barkley out indefinitely, third-year running back Wayne Gallman will take the lion's share of Barkley's reps. Gallman, the team's fourth-round pick in 2017, has 682 rushing yards on 169 carries with two rushing touchdowns, and has caught 51 out of 74 pass targets for 306 yards and 1 receiving touchdown.

"We certainly believe in Wayne Gallman and that he'll be able to step in and do his very best," head coach Pat Shurmur said of Gallman.

Gallman is certainly not short on confidence about the opportunity before him.

"I view it as a big opportunity, an opportunity I’ve had since I came into the league," he said.

"It’s unfortunate for my brother (Barkley) to go out, but this is what I’ve prepared for, this is what I have been preparing for, so I’m ready for it."

The Giants are also expected to elevate rookie Jon Hilliman from their practice squad to provide depth at the position where, in addition to Gallman, fullback Eli Penny is the only other healthy running back on the roster.

On defense, the Giants could be without inside linebackers Alec Ogletree (hamstring) and Tae Davis (concussion). They have already re-signed Nate Stupar, who was with them in the summer but who didn't make the initial 53-man roster, to provide depth.

The thing to watch at this position is rookie Ryan Connelly, who will take over making the calls on defense for Ogletree.

Last week Connelly did a good job of orchestrating the defense after Ogletree's injury and is expected to retain that role again this week when the Giants host Washington at MetLife Stadium.

The Giants could also be thin at receive this week depending on what happens with Cody Latimer (concussion). Latimer was limited in Wednesday's practice, donning the yellow "no contact" jersey.

Meanwhile, Bennie Fowler, who started in place of Latimer last week, was also limited with a hamstring strain, and Russell Shepard did not practice due to a foot strain, nor did defensive lineman Olsen Pierre (knee) was also limited.

Edge rusher Lorenzo Carter was listed as limited with an elbow injury, but he should be good to go Sunday.
