Report: Sterling Shepard Could Miss at Least Another Two Weeks

The Giants are rightfully playing it safe with Shepard, who is dealing with his second concussion of the 2019 season.
Robert Deutsch-USA TODAY Sports

Giants wide receiver Sterling Shepard, who was entered into the league’s concussion protocol last week for the second time in less than a month, is not expected to be cleared for Sunday’s game against the Cardinals--and beyond, reports ESPN.

The report aligns with what a source told SI.com’s Giants Maven once Shepard was initially entered into the protocol, that the receiver, given not only that this is his second concussion of the season but given the proximity of the two injuries, would “be out a while.”

Shepard has been listed as limited in practice this week. He’s been wearing the yellow jersey to indicate that he’s not to engage in any contact.

The Giants, per the protocol, have not activated players until they can put in a full week of practice with no restrictions.

As long as Shepard or any player is assigned to wear the yellow jersey during practice, he’s unlikely to be cleared to play that weekend.

Shepard suffered his first concussion of 2019 in the Week 1 loss to the Cowboys but was not initially removed from that game. He showed up on the Week 2 injury report and missed the Week 2 contest against the Bills.

His second concussion came in Week 5 against the Vikings. He was inactive last week against the Patriots.

“When he can play, the doctors will tell us,” coach Pat Shurmur said of Shepard. “Certainly, player safety is on the front burner for us. So, we’ll have to see where he goes with that.”
