3 Lions Players Who Impressed, 1 Who Struggled at Rookie Minicamp

All Lions takes a look at the three Detroit Lions players who impressed the most during Day 2 of rookie minicamp.

The Detroit Lions were able to get a first glimpse of their draft class this weekend, as rookie minicamp is taking place at the team's Allen Park practice facility.

Three players were able to stand out, based on their skillset and attitude and during the portion of minicamp practice that was open to the media.

Here is who impressed at rookie minicamp this weekend.

Sam LaPorta

The ex-Iowa Hawkeyes tight end was praised for his fluid route-running and ability to get open at practice.

It is widely believed LaPorta will be featured in Detroit's offense, especially due to his ability to secure yards after the catch.

Having linebacker Jack Campbell on the Lions roster is an added benefit, as the former Hawkeyes teammates and roommates will compete against each other all offseason.

“We lived in a house with all of our buddies. It’s just like backyard football. Not actually, but like, you’re just going against your buddy. You’re competing, and that’s what we love," LaPorta said. "We all love football, and it’s so fun to do it against Jack.”

Jack Campbell

It was noticeable that Campbell is being given leadership responsibilities, even at minicamp.

Manning the middle linebacker position,Detroit's first-round pick was able to identify what the offense was attempting to accomplish pre-snap.

If Campbell is one day able to lead the defense by donning the green dot, it appears the transition will be a smooth one.

Hendon Hooker

Despite sitting out, Detroit's newest quarterback has quickly gained acceptance from his teammates, especially from other members of the rookie class.

Hooker was chatting with offensive lineman Colby Sorsdal and intently taking in coaching from Detroit's offensive coaching staff.

His leadership style has also caught the attention of Detroit's front office.

“He’s just walking around, dapping everybody up. I think he’s a great leader," rookie wideout Antoine Green said. “Just watching him, too. I watched him over the course of last season and I feel like he’s a phenomenal player. I think he’ll do great here.”

QB Adrian Martinez struggles

Martinez was the only-signal caller at rookie minicamp. At times, the inexperienced quarterback held on to the football far too long, allowing the defense to break up plays.

According to scouting reports, the undrafted free agent must continue to work on improving accuracy and placement, has a tendency to throw with a wide base and excessive stride length and decision-making.
