Jonathan Mingo Receives Some Tips and Advice from Steve Smith Sr.

Carolina's second-round pick gets to pick the brain of a future Hall of Famer.

David Tepper asked Panthers legend Steve Smith Sr. who "his guy" was on the morning of day two of the draft. That guy was Ole Miss wide receiver, Jonathan Mingo. Nearly one month later, the two are working together at Panthers' rookie minicamp.

"It's dope,' Mingo responded when asked about the opportunity to learn from the future Hall of Famer. "I've been looking up to Steve Smith since I was a kid. I love that attitude he brought to the game. If there was one receiver in the league you didn't want to mess with it was Steve Smith. He played like a running back after the catch. You could see his toughness. You can just look at him and see he's all about business, he don't play. It's a blessing just to chop it up, talk ball with him.

"He was telling me when I start to get tired my technique starts to get a little sloppy sometimes. So he's trying to tell me to make sure my technique is good so it don't show that I'm tired."

For Smith to take some time out of his schedule and show up at practice is huge for these young guys and Reich spoke to the importance of it at the end of Friday's session.

"It was great. I love to see Steve out there. You can just feel his energy. He got involved in a little drill work out there, that was great. Had him say a few words to the guys afterwards. He just speaks and it's like okay, this guy's got some presence. What he says is going to carry weight with those guys. It's kind of cool that we get him here and hope to see a lot of him out here."
