Quick Hits: Red Zone Work, RBs Showing Promise, Injury Updates + More

Carolina Panthers head coach Frank Reich met with reporters following Thursday's practice.

How installing the offense and defense has gone

"There have been multiple system overloads. And actually, you want that a little bit. It's a fine line. You push a little bit, you install just enough and then you keep pushing them. You want to see who can handle it, who can't, and then you back off. When you get a system overload, you back off a little bit. Let's go back to the basics, then boom. You push them again."

Working red zone offense

"In the red zone, you absolutely need high processing speed and you also need great accuracy. But what you also need is all eleven guys being on the same page. The windows are tight. We worked really hard these last couple days working these red zone routes trying to get them right so we're all on the same page. It tightens up down there and everybody needs to be on point."

DJ Chark injury update

"The last couple days he's only done some rehab work on the side and then when we get to the walkthrough portions, he's in on the walkthrough portions. Maybe there's a chance he can get into some live-action in that last week. Maybe we just hold him until training camp. He's making good progress."

Hayden Hurst injury update

"Same thing. He'll actually be out here on Friday, he and DJ, we'll get them in. They won't be in any team reps but they're going to start getting in some routes on air. Really no competitive stuff but both guys will get a little bit of that tomorrow."

How creative they can be with Laviska Shenault

"It'll be interesting. I think Laviska has been one of those guys out here that's looked good. We'll continue to investigate the different roles that he can play. Even if we had this grandiose plan, which maybe we do, I won't reveal that here or now with all the different ways you can use him. But you look at guys like Deebo Samuel and stuff like that and you say, 'Well, can Laviska do some of that kind of stuff?' Of course, he can. So, we'll experiment with some of that stuff and some of it will get incorporated and some of it won't."

Approach to handling the running back room

"I love the by-committee thing and the different role things. I like to involve everybody. Now, listen, Miles Sanders has looked good and at this point, he's our number one guy. But Chuba [Hubbard] has looked good, Raheem [Blackshear] has looked good. I mean, the whole group has shown good promise. We'll see how it continues to develop but excited about the running back room."
