Report: Newton expected back after bye week

ESPN’s Adam Shefter cited league sources today that Cam Newton has “healed well” from a foot injury and should return to practice following Carolina’s week off.

The 2015 league MVP has missed the past four games — all Panthers wins. Newton went 50 for 89 during Carolina’s 0-2 start with 572 yards and an interception.

Back-up Kyle Allen has gone completed 80 of 122 passes for 901 yards and seven touchdowns during that span, becoming the first QB to being his career 5-0 with no interceptions since the NFL-AFL merger in 1970. Allen also led the Panthers to a win in the 2018 season-finale against New Orleans.

The report states that Cam should be returning to PRACTICE following the bye week. Practice is not game time. Trainers and coaches will certainly be observing Cam VERY closely during the practice sessions and continue to monitor his progress during conditioning exercises. I doubt that we will see him against the 49ers and I hope that they will plan on bringing him back slowly. There is no reason we can not rotate the quarterback position just like we do defensive ends. I would like to see Riverboat Ron bring Cam back for a few series in a few games following the contest in San Francisco before installing Cam as the starting quarterback and expecting him to play an entire game. Go Panthers!! Keep Pounding!!

Interesting to see what happens with this situation. Hard to bench Cam when healthy, but Allen is making his case. I say put Cam back in when healthy and if he still isn't playing well, then you stick with Allen. McCaffrey also has helped Allen look good, so hard to tell how big of an impact Allen is actually making
