Panthers Trade Proposal: Brian Burns Heads to Baltimore for Picks and David Ojabo

Brian Burns heads to Baltimore in this Bleacher Report trade projection.

If you were new Carolina Panthers GM Dan Morgan, what would you do with Brian Burns? He's in an interesting position.

Carolina has dangled Burns in trade talks going back to the 2022 deadline. When the team and Burns' camp couldn't come to a contract extension last offseason, Burns played 2023 on the final year of his rookie contract. A $16 million option that was picked up by the team. Burns is on record saying that he played this past season with less of an edge as he was wary of getting hurt and blowing his shot at a life-changing contract extension in 2024.

Rumors are still flying about Burns, and it's likely that he'll receive the franchise tag from Carolina this offseason if him and the team still can't reach an agreement on a long-term deal.

In this scenario proposed by Bleacher Report, Carolina would trade Burns to Baltimore for their first round pick in 2024 (#30 overall), a 2025 third round pick, and EDGE David Ojabo. Ojabo was a second round pick in 2022 who has appeared in five games in his short NFL career. Famously, Ojabo tore his Achillies tendon at his pro day while performing drills at the University of Michigan. The injury Ojabo suffered plummeted him down draft boards and his two injury plagued seasons have left much to be desired.

Burns' trade value has only gone down from the proposed two first round picks and change that the Los Angeles Rams offered in 2022, but Burns is still a valuable piece for any team in the league.

If Carolina is to trade Burns, they'll either need to draft his replacement with that Baltimore pick or sign an elite pass rusher in free agency. Carolina struggled with making opposing quarterbacks uncomfortable in 2023, and by trading their best pass-rusher, they'd amplify an already problematic situation. Josh Allen (Jaguars) and Danielle Hunter are the two best veteran edge rushers on the market, and it's likely that both of their current teams will retain their homegrown talent.
