ESPN's Schefter Speaks on the Future in Carolina

Schefter hints towards big changes on Mint Street.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter went on the Pat McAfee show on Monday and discussed the current situation in Carolina. A team that outwardly expressed its goal of reaching the playoffs this season, that now sits at 1-8 in week ten. Here is Schefter’s full two minute monologue on Carolina.

“I don’t think anyone has a long rope there just because of the type of season they’re having. We go back to last year and Matt Rhule, there were stories coming out the week before he’s fired: ‘David Tepper is going to be patient, David Tepper is going to take his time.’

One thing about David Tepper is that he’s not very patient. As successful as he is, because of the way he’s operated his business. It’s worked for him at basically every level. He does what he wants, and I don’t think people are thinking there’s trouble right now with those people, but would anybody be surprised with anything that happens in Carolina after this year? No.

Look, you have the kind of season that they’re having, let’s keep in mind on Thursday night they play the Bears. The Bears have their number one draft pick. So, if the Bears win on Thursday night, it’s a huge victory, and in an even bigger way, than just winning the game itself for the Chicago Bears on Thursday night.

Again, this is not the kind of season that the Carolina Panthers expected. Whether we’re talking about the Giants or the Panthers or any team that is going through what they’re going through and this is the kind of year that ends up being a long, miserable season, there are going to be people that lose jobs, wherever it is, there are going to be changes that are made wherever it is, that is the way that the league runs and operates.

You want the good people to be kept, and the people that mean a lot to the league to stick around as long as possible, but the fact of the matter is that’s not going to happen especially in the places that are having the type of year that these franchises are.”

Nothing that Schefter said should come as a surprise to folks that follow the Panthers, but any words that come from one of the NFL’s most prominent insiders carries significant weight.

Schefter was spot on. The type of season Carolina is having is one that reeks of change even though we’re just past the halfway point of the season.

The results on the field are bad. The stands at home games are overrun by opposing fans. The rookie quarterback is heading down the David Carr trail of being irreparably broken by a deteriorating offensive line. Opposing owners are dancing in the locker rooms at Bank of America Stadium.

Change is scary, but change can also be a good thing, and come December, change may be coming.
