In this story:

After making the initial 53-man roster, second-year quarterback Matt Corral is being waived by the Carolina Panthers. Wide receiver Derek Wright and linebacker Chandler Wooten were also waived to make room for the team's additions through waivers - OL Calvin Throckmorton, DB D'Shawn Jamison, and LB Claudin Cherelus.

The coaching staff liked what they saw from the former third-round draft pick but ultimately knew there wasn't much of a role for him on this roster.

Here's what head coach Frank Reich said a few days ago about the strides Corral has made in his development.

"Really encouraged with Matt. I think he's made great progress. Matt's incredibly athletic. He's got a really strong arm. I think he's worked as hard as anybody in the building. Josh McCown has done a great job and those two have put a lot of time in together, so happy with the progress that he's made. He's had a lot of snaps in the preseason and I think he's done a good job."

If Corral clears waivers, he will be eligible to return to the Panthers on the practice squad.
